A new week, time for a new blogpost!
This weekend was a very busy weekend for me. As you already know, I'm a student photography. We are now in our second trimester and our deadline for assignments is the 14th of february. This weekend I finished two of my assignments.
In this blogpost I will talk about my experiences I had during these shoots.
Nieuwjaarsduik Oostende 2014
The first assignment was an annually event. In December I contacted the organization of the 'Nieuwjaarsduik 2014' that was planned the 4th of January 2014. It didn't take long before I received a positive answer. I could pick up my 'press badge' the day itself. I arrived at 1115hrs, but I was way too early. I decided to make some overall pictures of an empty beach and some random pictures from the few people that were already there. After that I went for a walk to work on another assignment (Themed 'Ostend').
1400hrs - I headed back to the starting position of the 'nieuwjaarsduik'. The people were gathering in the 'divers only' zone. Only photographers with a press badge had access to this zone to make pictures of the people.
I decided to practice combining ambient light and flash light. I manually measured the light on the sky (the lightest part of the picture) and started making pictures.
The lightning conditions didn't change a lot because it was a grey sky. I also equipped myself with a GoPro Hero 2, to keep some video footage afterwards. 10 minutes later I wanted to restart the video, but then I saw my GoPro freezed at 4 seconds. I quickly reset it to start a new video. Too bad, but that learns me to check my gear more often during the shoots!
1500hrs - Time has come for the divers to race to the water, I positioned myself in the middle of the beach with my ultra wide angle lens. My goal was to catch the people from beneath while they were running past me. But I forgot one thing. A flash can't fire continues on a high frames per second. While I pressed the shutter, my flash only fired two times. After those two times he didn't fire anymore. I didn't notice it due to the adrenaline so I kept on shooting. Suddenly I did realize it and I had to change battery's before my flash fired again.
1730hrs - After an intensive day shooting, it was time to go home!
Overall it was a great experience and a joy to be there!
A day in the life of a ... child
My second assignment I finished this past weekend was 'a day in the life of a child'. I was invited to the very first birthday of the beautiful daughter of a friend of mine. During this day I really got confronted with the troubles one can have using on-camera flash and ambient light (interior). As it was the first 'real' time combining on-camera flash and ambient light in an interior, I realized my technique needs to be better if I want to become a great photographer. Even if I don't really need to use flash in landscape photography. These are basic techniques that each photographer should know from the top of his head.
Beneath you can find one of the pictures of the 'nieuwjaarsduik 2014'.

In a nutshell: two lessons I learned from these shoots:
1) Check your gear regularly to avoid problems!
2) Practice, practice and practice new techniques!
I'll end this blog with a new question for all readers, feel free to respond in the comment section:
- What techniques do you need to improve to become a better photographer?
